What is Normal?

When it comes to new piercings, there’s a wide range of physical responses that, while they might feel alarming at first, are usually perfectly normal. Let’s break down what “normal” means in this context:

  1. Bleeding and Bruising:

Bleeding: It’s common for fresh piercings to bleed lightly or intermittently over the first few days to a week. This minor bleeding is part of the body’s natural response to the piercing.

Bruising: Some bruising in the surrounding area can also occur as blood vessels can be affected.
  2. Redness and Swelling:

Redness: The area around a new piercing will often show redness due to increased blood flow as part of the healing process.

Swelling: Swelling is another natural response in the early stages and typically decreases gradually.
  3. Healing Sensations vs. Complete Healing: Although your piercing might start to feel “better” or seem healed on the surface, complete healing occurs gradually beneath the skin. It’s essential to be patient through this process to avoid complications later on.
  4. Jewelry Retention: Even when a piercing appears healed, it can shrink or close if the jewelry is removed too early. Unless there’s an issue with the jewelry’s size, style, or material, it’s important to keep it in place for the full duration of the healing process.
  5. Itching and Crust Formation:

Itching: A mild itch is normal as your skin heals, though it’s crucial not to scratch the area to avoid irritation or potential infection.

Fluid Secretion and Crust:  The secretion of a white-ish or yellow fluid and the formation of a crust around the piercing are typical during the healing process. This crust is essentially dried lymph and fluid that your body produces as it repairs itself.

While all these signs are generally normal, it’s important to be vigilant. Should you notice any signs that deviate from the typical healing process—such as increasing pain, significant swelling, a foul odor, or a sudden change in discharge give us a call, come in, or seek professional care.

Understanding these normal healing signs can help you stay calm and follow proper aftercare instructions while your body works to repair itself.
